YOUR CHILDBIRTH CLASS:
A COMPREHENSIVE PARENT-CENTERED GUIDE TO BIRTH OPTIONS

by May Nolan
1998, 214 pages, paperback PB9875

In her book Your Childbirth Class, Mary Nolan educates women on various birth options while strongly supporting the birth experience that belongs to the whole family. In trying to achieve positive birth experiences, the author starts out with topics ranging from discomforts of pregnancy and how to cope with them, evaluating birth options and birthing facilities, proceeding through labor and delivery, and concluding with those overwhelming first days with baby.

Included is an excellent chapter on labor support, with information on positioning, breathing techniques, and counterpressure. The importance of good labor support and communication with medical professionals is stressed.

Information is presented in a comprehensive yet easy-to read manner. There are many illustrations and charts throughout the book that aid in understanding the topics. Birth and parenting experiences shared by other women and couples add a personal and realistic touch.

This book is a valuable resource for all birthing women, not just for those who are expecting their first child. It would be a good reference book for those who wish to follow a birth plan that they may have chosen. Also, birth professionals will find the book very useful. In addition to the topics covered, it also offers names and addresses of many resources and support groups. It would be a fine addition to the library of a childbirth educator or doula.
