Focal Point on Childbirth Education: Diagnosing and Treating Burnout

This article describes six symptoms of burnout in the childbirth educator from "tired of hearing yourself talk" through "praying for a natural disaster so that your class will be cancelled." It provides numerous suggestions to treat these symptoms, ranging from new teaching techniques to ways to replenish your energy. The focus of the article is on maintaining teaching enthusiasm.

Belly-Dancing Through Pregnancy: A Way to Give Birth and Not Be Delivered

The author discusses her program, Belly-Dancing Through Pregnancy, which she teaches to pregnant women in Germany. She details the practical aspects of the program which she divides into a warm-up phase, a dancing phase, and a resting phase. The physical and emotional effects on the woman, her birth, and her baby are included. She also explains how the logical consequence of belly-dancing is an upright birth position and how midwifery care can profit from belly-dancing.

Relaxation Techniques for a Lifetime of Comfort

The Challenge of Change: Making Mother-Friendly Care A Reality In Childbirth Education

In this article, background information is provided about the formation and development of The Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS). The Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative, an evidence-based document written for birthing professionals which provides guidelines for identifying and designating "mother-friendly" birth sites, is discussed. CIMS' new educational tool, Ten Questions to Ask When Deciding Where to Have Your Baby, is included. The pamphlet describes simply and clearly what questions one may ask to learn about a particular birth site. The article concludes by listing current strategies for increasing the demand for change in childbirth practices to a mother-friendly model.
