Nutrition in Adolescent Pregnancy

Teenage pregnancy continues to be a major public health issue and is associated with significant medical, social, and economic risk. Nutritional status is considered to be one of the most important environmental factors affecting the health of the teenage mother and her infant. An adolescent's nutrition and weight status and lifestyle practices prior to and at conception, as well as during conception, profoundly influences pregnancy and infant outcome. This article addresses nutrient needs of pregnant adolescents and nutrition screening, assessment, and counseling approaches.
What Expectant Teens Need From Their Caregivers

An expectant teen has many needs, including emotional and learning needs. Caregivers would be wise to gain an understanding of the developmental stage that a teen mother is in and tailor her care to the needs of the teen parent. Methods that enhance the care given to expectant teens include listening skills, a nonjudgmental attitude, knowledge of the behavioral development of teenagers and the way that teenagers think, using examples in teaching, focusing on how healthy habits benefit the teen, teaching appropriate and needed information, and allowing the teen some control.
Giving Pregnant Teens Another Option: Teaching About Adoption

In educating teenage mothers and fathers about their choices regarding childbirth and parenting, are you equipped to competently discuss adoption as a viable option? One study showed that sixty percent of pregnancy counselors did not mention adoption, and of those who did mention it, forty percent gave inaccurate information. The goal of this article is to give educators the resources and knowledge needed to present factual information about adoption in a caring, relevant, and unbiased manner.
